Reload Pickleball Paddle Review: Innovation Meets Execution
What if you didn’t have to replace your entire paddle just to refresh your spin? That’s the idea behind the Reload Paddle, a first-of-its-kind paddle featuring a replaceable carbon fiber surface. Instead of buying a whole new paddle when the grit wears out, you peel off the old layer and slap on a fresh sheet. Simple concept. Big implications.
But does the performance hold up? Is this a real innovation or just a flashy gimmick? Let’s dive in.
A Quick Note on Transparency
Reload sent me this paddle for testing—no contracts, no strings attached. I wasn’t paid for this review, and Reload didn’t see it before publication. What you’re getting here is 100% my experience, plus feedback from high-level players who helped me test it on the court.
Initial Skepticism, Real Performance
Let’s be honest—I came into this review skeptical. The idea of a swappable paddle surface sounds like something aimed at a niche market. Most players don’t burn through grit fast enough to justify this kind of system.
But once I put it on the court, I was surprised. It doesn’t feel like a gimmick. It feels like a well-built paddle that happens to have a unique maintenance system.
Build & Tech Overview
- Core: 16mm polypropylene honeycomb
- Surface: T700 raw carbon fiber with peel-ply texture
- Dimensions: 16.375" length x 7.5" width
- Handle: 5.5" length, 4.25" circumference
- Balance Point: 24.6 cm
- USA Pickleball Approved
That peel-ply carbon grabs the ball nicely. Spin measured 2128 RPM, putting it in the top third of my database. That’s not elite spin, but it’s more than enough for shaping shots and adding variety.
On-Court Performance
Feel: Balanced and plush, not too soft or too firm. That gives it a versatile feel—good feedback without being harsh.
Control: The paddle is very easy to reset with. Dinks, drops, and blocks all feel stable. The face absorbs pace just enough to help you stay in control without sacrificing responsiveness.
Power: Serves averaged 55 MPH, punch volleys landed at 34.7 MPH. That puts it in a control-leaning category. You can still generate pace when needed, but it doesn’t overdo it.
Maneuverability: Here’s the trade-off. The swing weight clocks in at 123.45, which is on the heavier side. It’s stable and helps with plow-through, but it’s not the fastest at the net. If you rely heavily on handspeed or have arm sensitivity, that might be a limiter.
Stability: Twist weight is 6.65—above average for a hybrid shape. That gives the paddle a forgiving sweet spot and limits the damage on mishits. Very few pop-ups, and easy to stay in points.
Other Player Feedback
One of my 4.5-level testers said the paddle felt like a “deceptive weapon.” The shape and balance allowed her to drop or attack with little adjustment. She especially liked the plush, connected feel that made it easy to disguise shots from mid-court. That aligns with what I felt as well—it gives you confidence without needing time to “learn” the paddle.
Replaceable Grit – Is It Worth It?
- Paddle Price: $200
- Grit Sheets: $50 each
If you’re someone who wears down paddles quickly chasing elite-level spin, this might actually save you money. Instead of buying a new $200 paddle a few times per year, you refresh the surface for $50. But here’s the caveat—you have to actually care about grit loss for this feature to matter. If not, it’s just added cost.
That said, the swappable surface is cleanly executed. No buzz, no instability. You’d never know it’s removable unless someone told you.
Limitations
The biggest drawback right now is the lack of variety. Reload only offers one shape, one build, one configuration. If the shape doesn’t suit your playstyle, you’re out of luck. Hopefully that changes in the future—I'd love to see a standard shape or hybrid model.
Final Verdict
The Reload Paddle is one of the most unique paddles I’ve tested—not because of some gimmick, but because the core innovation is actually well-executed. The replaceable surface works, and the paddle plays well across the board.
Is it going to change the entire market overnight? No. But it points toward a future where high-performance gear can also be maintained sustainably.
Who it’s for:
- Players who value consistent spin over time
- Those who want a controlled, stable, plush paddle
- Early adopters who appreciate modular design
Who it’s not for:
- Players who rely on fast hands and ultra-light setups
- Budget-focused buyers who don’t care about long-term grit maintenance
Would I Recommend It?
Yes—with conditions. If the shape suits your playstyle and you care about grit maintenance, this is a smart investment. If not, you’re better off with a traditional paddle in the same price range. But either way, Reload deserves credit for building something different—and doing it well.
